Rivkah: Rising Above Her Origins
Raised in a home of idolatry, deceit, and corruption, Rivkah became a model of trust, generosity, and love. She did not merely escape her past; she transcended it, creating a home filled with blessing and Divine Presence.
As the Baal Shem Tov teaches, a soul may be placed in spiritually difficult surroundings so that, by choosing light, it can elevate sparks that others could not. Rivkah did not inherit holiness. She created it.
Our Upbringing Does Not Dictate Our Destiny
“I wasn’t raised religious. I wasn’t raised with any awareness of God. I wasn’t taught His name.”
Rivkah’s life teaches that none of these circumstances can excuse us from pursuing spiritual growth. Our upbringing does not dictate our destiny, and our past cannot determine our future.
As the Rambam explains in the laws of teshuva, a person’s identity can be remade, and past darkness transformed into light. Every soul carries a spark of truth that transcends its environment. Holiness is not inherited, and in Hashem’s eyes, no one is disqualified because of their origins.
Our Past Is Not Our Prison
Rivkah’s declaration, “I will go,” embodies the courage to leave behind the familiar and move beyond one’s upbringing toward the light of truth.
The daughter of Betuel, raised in a home of corruption, became the matriarch through whom blessing and the Shechina returned to Sarah’s tent.
A person does not need to come from a home of holiness to bring holiness into the world. Even someone raised without faith, without Torah, or surrounded by the opposite of everything Torah represents can choose a different path and reveal a spiritual greatness that their upbringing could never have predicted.
