WELCOMING SHABBAT

Shabbat is more than a day of refraining from worldly activity.

When experienced to its spiritual fullest, its holiness enlightens all other days of the week.

We invite you to enhance your Shabbat with these words of Torah.

Re’eh anochi noten lifneichem ayom beracha v’klala

“See, this day I set before you blessing and curse”

(Devarim 11:26)

With these words, HKBH imprinted, in each Jew, the potential to choose the beracha, aside from what his current spiritual level is or in which situation he presently stands.

A person is subjugated to his instinct whenever he commits an avera (sin). Nevertheless, HKBH renews his potential and ability to choose the beracha, i.e. He renews the person’s free will. This restoration occurs daily, as reflected in the liturgy of the morning prayers.

And that’s why HKBH can tell us to choose life.

He gives us the ability to do that.

Every sentence of the Torah is not merely information; it is a formation, a creation of reality.

Therefore, the command “Bacharta ba’chaim” – “Chose life”- means that we are given this capacity through these letters of the Torah, teaching us that the world is created with letters, which, in turn, infuse in us the power to accomplish.
