This month is called Av, which in Hebrew means “father.” Even though God has hidden His presence from us, and we must live with the consequences of that absence, the name of the month reminds us that God acts as a loving father. This means that everything we experience is purposeful and for our ultimate good.
In today’s challenging times, when enemies rise against Israel, it’s important to focus on a key aspect: The promise from God that “He will not forsake His people”.
Historically, Israel has survived against all odds, despite threats from powerful empires that have since vanished. This divine promise is a testament to God’s enduring protection over the Jewish people, ensuring their survival through every generation.
“And this [promise] stood by our ancestors and us. For not only one [enemy] has risen against us to destroy us, but in every generation, they rise against us to destroy us, and the Holy One, Blessed be He, saves us from their hand.” (Passover Haggadah)
However, a question arises: Why do threats and dangers persist?
The answer lies in the Torah, which teaches that when people stray from spiritual and moral paths, God allows adversaries to arise to prompt reflection and self-improvement.
“Just as a father disciplines his son, Hashem your G-d is disciplining you.”( Deut. 8:5)
Relying on God rather than solely on military or political might is essential. While Israel’s defense capabilities, such as the Iron Dome and military strength, are important, ultimate trust should be placed in God, who has many ways to protect His people. This reliance should bring calmness and confidence, reinforcing the belief that divine intervention will ensure safety.
